Stamp-A-Birthday: Book & Rubber Stamp Kit
Published in Hardcover by Hugh Lauter Levin Associates (November, 1998)
Authors: Judy Ritchie, Kate Schmidt, and Judy Pelikan
Average review score:

a wonderful book/rubber stamp set!
This book is my favorite of the series of "stamp-a" sets, and I have several of them! In the kit are 25 foam mounted rubber stamps (spring/birthday themed for the most part), fancy scissors, charms, pencil crayons, paper and envelopes, a plastic stencil and the book! The book itself is great-it covers many basic stamping techniques (plus some extra creative ideas) and has a sizeable section with color photos of ideas using these stamps! Following that are instructions for all the cards/projects. It's an excellent deal--well worth the money--and a good read, even an experienced stamper can get something out of this book!

Perfectly fun for any child, any age.
The questions children ask most while in the kitchen with you. Each question and answer are simply formated for the most information with the easiest understanding. I used this book for a library reading session with 2nd graders, asking them the questions first, finding their thoughts then reading them the answers from the book. They absolutely loved it and wanted more. I am now online to order the rest of the series!!! It is perfect for every age, even us older kids!!

A great book for curious pre-schoolers
This is a great book for curious pre-schoolers. My three year old and especially my four and a half year old love this book. It answers basic questions very well, with good illustrations and simple, but very correct explainations.

The Wonder of Moose (Animal Wonders)
Published in Library Binding by Gareth Stevens (September, 1996)
Authors: Rita Ritchie, Michael H. Francis, Sandy Stevens, and Jeff Moose Fair
Average review score:

A moose book for children to read and reread.
The Wonder of Moose is from the series of "Animal Wonders." The front cover shows a blue-eyed moose! My children totally enjoyed this book that has lots of pictures and interesting facts about moose. The print is a nice size, and the illustrations are amusing. This book is great for an older child who has an aversion to reading. He will enjoy being a moose "expert" after reading this!

Return from Tomorrow
Published in Paperback by Fleming H Revell Co (July, 1988)
Authors: George G. Ritchie and Elizabeth Sherrill
Average review score:

Unforgettable. One of my Top Ten....
Where the last guy was coming from (sounded like "fear" to me), I don't know, but this book did more to RESTORE my faith than any other I've ever read....

It's a "quick read" (2-3 hours), but it affects you for the rest of your life....

I've read it twice.... The first time, it sounded too unbelievable and yet was compelling enough that I never forgot it.....

Several years later, after much spiritual growth, I read it again, and the truth of it rang loudly within me.... I thought the experience he related "too detailed" the first time.... But I since read much about "near death" experiences and learned that a large percent of people who have an experience have one just as detailed as George Ritchie's -- and many of the details closely match his own account....

Give it a read and see what YOU think.....

One of the most important books I've ever read.
I have read this book many times, and it has changed how I live my life. Dr. Ritchie's account of his near death experience is amazing yet as credible an account as I've ever read. I have purchased many, many copies of this book to give to friends and relatives over the years. The people I've given this book to all have described the reading of it as a powerful spiritual experience -- even a few agnostics who've read it. I highly recommend this little book. You can read it through in a couple of hours, but you'll come back to it time and time again.

An astonishing true life story
This book relates a very fascinating sequence of events, and is obviously not contrived in any way except the necessary dulling to fit the experience into normal language. It's still brilliant!

I'd recommend it to anyone who has any interest in anything at all, and defy them to say how anyone could concoct such a story if it is not true. I've read phoney "spiritual stories" such as Lobsang Rampa, but this one was too fantastic to be imagined. That sincerity cannot be manufactured.

It's understandable that someone who had this experience would not be immediately keen to publish the "story", particularly in an intolerant society whose members think that their version of Christianity is the only authentic view. Were George Ritchie a Buddhist, he would have interpreted his experience only slightly differently, but he would not have encountered such self-righteous condemnation. "Christians" would have ignored it altogether. I am very happy that many have read it.

My Descent into Death, and the Message of Love which Brought me Back
Published in Paperback by Clairview Books (10 July, 2000)
Authors: Howard Storm and George G. Ritchie
Average review score:

Tell me its a typo
I heard Howard Storm on a late night radio talk show and was truly moved and inspired by his experience. I immediately ordered the book (on line) and rushed to read it the day it arrived. I found his accounts so vivid and detailed that I knew he had to be speaking the truth. Because his recollections of what Jesus and the angels related to him were so exact and specific I was very disappointed when I read the following in chapter 15 on page 120...."I sat in a pew and prayed God would answer my question of how to share God's love. After a long period of silence I heard a faint voice say, 'H eight.'What could this mean? I listened intently and heard, 'B two.' What was God saying? Then I heard, 'N fourteen.' I stood up and went to the open window and realized I was hearing the caller of a Bingo game drifting into the chapel. I laughed at my stupidity."........Either Mr Storm is very unfamiliar with Bingo (H eight?? N fourteen??) or God was actually giving him some other message yet to be deciphered. Although I found this to be a most powerful story I cannot escape the fact that its veracity depends entirely upon the accuracy of the recollections of its author. If Mr Storm "listened Intently" to H eight and N fourteen, then there must be a typo, in which case I will gladly change my rating to five stars.

Best NDE Book I've Read
Out of the 20 or so NDE books that I've read, I was most impressed by this. The first thing that piqued my interest was Howard Storm's description of hell. I had once had a dream about hell that was similar to that described in the book and I had never heard anyone accurately describe it prior to this. Howard's description of heaven, his life review, and God's love are deep. You will learn from this book. Howard's story demonstrates how spiritual illness like selfishness, greed, and hate can manifest as physical illness. Prior to reading Howard's book I had believed in NDEs and a non-judgmental loving God, but I had become somewhat hostile to organized religion. The book teaches you that there is no preferred religion and that whatever path leads you to God is the right one. The book emphasizes the importance of love and that love is the true spiritual name of God. The narrative is captivating, you won't want to put the book down once you start reading. Another thing about this book that is unique among NDE books is that as an art professor, Howard was able to paint pictures of what heaven (and hell) were like. You can see one on the cover and there are several more inside. Very compelling.

You Won't Be the Same After Reading This Book!
This is an awesome account of the reality of what awaits us all after this life...heaven or hell. God has been trying to teach me for years that the "heart" is what He looks at. Organized religion really gets off the tracks by pushing "works" as a means to God and the way to please Him. I finally got it!! I can do good "works" but if it isn't done through a heart of Love, it won't amount to anything, in this life or eternally. This book is a real eye opener to the biblical truths of Love that Jesus, God's Son, taught. It will change the way you view life.

Desperation Medicine
Published in Paperback by Gateway (February, 2001)
Author: Ritchie C. Shoemaker
Average review score:

Covers more than just Lyme disease
Although the book rambles somewhat in a story telling way, it covers useful information about a treatment option that many people with Lyme, CFS, FM, MCS, ADHD, Sick Building Syndrome and many other disorders that Shoemaker classifies as neurotoxin mediated illnesses may benefit from. I wish the book covered in more detail the exact methods and testing procedures that he uses, because from information I've learned elsewhere he does more than just test with the Contrast Sensitivity Test and give cholestyramine to his patients. But the book is a good starting point to learn about his theories.

Desperately Sick
After fighting for four years with every kind of diagnosis from chronic fatigue syndrome, Fibro, MS, hypogammaglobulemnia and even Lyme disease, I just knew there had to be more ! More research, more informed physicians, more hope.
I drove over 3500 miles round trip to see Dr. Shoemaker and I have finally found my hope...I started reading this book on my trip home and was not able to put it down. I found the style of writing to be very refreshing for what could be a research intense topic. I never felt intimidated by medical jargon and found Dr. Shoemakers explainations of his research to make perfect sense. He was telling me my symptoms before I even told him and we are discovering that I've been carrying around a coagulase negative staph infection for at least four years. And yet not one of the other doctors, even the Mayo Clinic bothered to do the testing required to find a cause for my pain and illness. Dr. Shoemaker was troubled by my lab results and felt that by all logic, it was surprising that I was still alive.
But now we have a plan of action and I know that although it won't be easy, there is at least logic explainations for illnesses that other doctors choose to ignore...Shame on them. I wish I could buy every doctor in America this book by Dr. Shoemaker.........
A MUST BUY for anyone who has unexplainable symptoms........

God in the Pits: Confessions of a Commodities Trader
Published in Paperback by Island Lake Pr (January, 1997)
Author: Mark A. Ritchie
Average review score:

Engaging Life Story
For those of you looking for a book about trading commodities, "God in the Pits" is not for you. Although there are some interesting musings about life on the trading floor within the pages of this book, "God in the Pits" really tackles issues much more significant than trading.

At the core of this book is Mr. Ritchie's account of his own spiritual and religious questions as they relate to significant (and sometimes tragic) events throughout his life. Through a remarkably revealing personal account, Mr. Ritchie takes us from the deserts of Afghanistan to the shores of Oregon and on to the trading pits of Chicago. In the process, Mr. Ritchie shares with the reader a stimulating ideological debate about the reality of religion in his life, and how he was able to reconcile within himself some difficult questions. For anyone who has ever questioned their faith, and who also enjoys a life story of nearly epic proportions, this book IS for you.

THE ONLY BOOK WHERE THE AUTHOR TELLS SO MUCH ABOUT HIMSELF
This book is unique. You will not find the magic formula for making money in commodities that so many other books promise and none seem to ever deliver. Here the author takes you on a trip through his mind and heart to explore the self, his family and other social relationships, his career as a commodities trader and his experiments with God himself!

It gives one the courage to understand that just how the author had to scramble for a forgotten potato in the refridgerator to becoming a millionaire! The nice thing you will find here is an honest man explaining the good and bad about his life which many of us would prefer to hide. Many people try to create an "external self" to the public which is not true, but this book is different.

Also quite impressive is the author's family struggle to help the poor in Afghanistan where they went to the point of even adopting an entire family and "set them on their feet" in the United States. In short, God has given us and we must give to others is the best lesson to learn from this author.

An honest self-examination
What an incredible book! It took me only 3 days to read the whole thing. Everyone should take the time and energy to examine their own life and relationship with their Creator the way Ritchie did. He articulated his struggle to come to terms with God better than any I've ever seen.

Don't read this book to get tips on successful trading. It goes much deeper than that!

Amps!: The Other Half of Rock 'N' Roll
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (November, 1993)
Authors: Ritchie Fliegler and Jon F. Eiche
Average review score:

Ever heard of Peavey
Very interesting book, but I've heard that there's a little company in Mississippi that has made a few amps. How can a book about guitar amplifiers leave out one of the largest producers in the industry?

Changing the way you think about guitar tone
As the title of this book implies, it is about the role of guitar amplifiers in creating the unique signature sounds that many people instantly associate with various bands and guitarists they've heard over the years. While many musicians and the public tend to focus on the guitar itself in providing a unique sound, amps easily account for half or more of the sound quality and tonality of a performance. This book includes a good technical description of how guitar amps work, what makes them different from other types of amplifiers, and a worthwhile discussion of vintage tube amp tone versus the reissue models now being marketed by various manufacturers. It also has a useful troubleshooting section for dealing with various symptoms of an ailing amp. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is on the human nature side, providing excellent thumbnail sketches of the various companies and personalities that were involved in pioneering amplifier innovations, such as Jim Marshall and the legendary Leo Fender. The book also deals with the histories and/or products of other companies (including Vox, Ampeg, MESA/Boogie, Roland, Gibson and others), and has lots of photographs and reproductions of old advertising fliers. My only complaint about the book is that it misses the opportunity to give at least a little bit of technical specifications for the amps that are discussed and pictured. As just one example, on page 21 there is a photograph of a Fender Tweed Deluxe that was taken in Tuscon with the caption: "This cinder-block wall art surrounding Tucson's biggest meat packing plant seemed like the logical place to shoot this amp. Musta been the heat." The effort at humor aside, a more useful caption might have been, "This model Tweed Deluxe was manufactured by Fender between 1954 and 1961 and boasted a single 12" Jensen and 15 watts of power." It would have been a mistake for Fliegler to try to provide extensive technical specs on the numerous amps that are pictured throughout the book, but a little more detail in the captions would have been appreciated. I wouldn't want this one narrow criticism to overshadow the value of this entertaining and useful book, which will be of interest to players and collectors alike. The best thing you can say about a book is that it will change the way you think -- and that is exactly what this book will do for the performing guitarist who has underestimated the impact of guitar amplification in providing a unique and personalized sound. As a well known working guitarist and someone who also worked for Marshall, Fliegler has the credentials and experience needed to speak on this subject with a lot of authority.

Highly recommended to all music lovers.
Ritchie Fliegler cuts right to the heart of Rock & Rock. That "sound." He describes the efforts of many to capture that sound. In this digital crazy world, it is refreshing to read about those who spend a life's effort trying to create a totally subjective, analog product that cannot be graphed, charted, or placed into another database. When that "sound" is heard---the amplifier's designer knows he's onto something very good. It's that simple. Yet, not an easy task. Fliegler's writing is unpretentious. He has a pure love of the amplifier's role in Rock & Roll. This helps to emphasize the luck and persistence needed by these amplifier designers. It's nice to read about people dedicated to their jobs. Not for money or power, but for the passionate pursuit of an elusive goal. I highly recommend this book. You do not need to be a musician nut to enjoy it. It reveals just how important that "sound" was to the history of Rock, as the Rock groups, themselves.
